How can hypnosis help depression? Can hypnotherapy even help with depression?

Read on and you will find that, whether you visit our New Dimension Vitality clinic in Joondalup or Fremantle, hypnosis really can assist with management of your depression and depressive tendencies.

The World Health Organisation gives the following definition of  depression: “Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness and poor concentration.”

There will be people who will visit this site, and probably many others as well, looking for a magic wand, a little magic pill. They want, or are under the illusion, that hypnosis or hypnotherapy is a magic wand  that can be waved at them and Hey Presto! they are “cured”.  Unfortunately, these people will most likely, but not always, be disappointed.  Please do not misunderstand, miracles (or seemingly miraculous results) can and DO happen, however, in most cases, it is good old fashioned commitment and an honest desire to change that are heavily involved in the process, of ANY therapy, management or treatment for depression.

And coincidentally, it is these two elements of desire and commitment that truly do open the door to miracles!

A word of advice or caution for those who are depressed and looking for answers, (or the loved one wanting to assist) – start slowly.  What is meant by this is that in most cases, one should hold a reasonable expectation of feeling less awful instead of expecting to feel great in a hurry.  A little progress every day adds up to big results! Expecting quick and dramatic fixes or results almost always produces disappointment and a deepening or worsening of  a person’s depression or depressed state. That said, depression hypnosis becomes a very rapid and effective way to manage the symptoms of depression, because it communicates directly with the part of the brain responsible. The subconscious mind!

There are several general areas in which hypnosis can help people manage depression.  These areas include but are not limited to:

  • Beliefs and thoughts about capability
  • Beliefs and thoughts about self worth
  • Beliefs and thoughts about past, present or future
  • Beliefs and thoughts about parents, siblings, children, family and friends
  • Beliefs and thoughts concerning spirituality
  • Perceptions of current and past personal events and resulting impact on client

And many more old,  harmful beliefs and thoughts can be identified and nullified while at the same time a client is also guided to take pro-active steps in order to change their situation as appropriate.

Depression Hypnotherapy

The human brain is indeed one of the most powerful organs in the body and it is  also the main organ that functions during hypnotherapy – specifically the subconscious mind. Hypnosis also makes use of  your imagination. The whole therapy focuses on establishing coping mechanisms directly through the subconscious mind and this can allow clients to  make behaviour modifications and to refocus their attention. Communication with the subconscious mind allows a person to quickly locate the root causes behind the depression, as well as all of the compounded symptoms that exacerbate the problem. Because depression hypnosis works directly with the subconscious mind, it allows an individual to bypass the conscious critical self, and discover the real reason they feel so terribly negative, down or anxious and to disconnect from the “triggers”.

The new skills and good mental messages learned in a  hypnotherapy session for depression can be used to counter the effects of depressing thoughts  and ideas. Hypnotherapy doesn’t only empower a person with these new skills; it may also  help them to discover the roots of the depression. However, we do not usually regress a person as a way to “treat” depression.  Our approach is to look at where a person is now (acknowledging where they have come from) and where they want to be into the future. We may at times use NLP and reframing techniques within the hypnotherapy session, once trance has been induced, to assist with achieving the client’s outcome. Hypnosis for depression is a variety of clinical hypnotherapy that focuses on both the management of depression and depressive symptoms as well as any negativity or anxiety, as these often go hand in hand with depression.

Hypnotherapy is NOT offered as an alternative to or replacement of your medication, doctor or mental health practitioner.  Rather, it is offered as an allied therapy, a tool with which to empower yourself and a therapy to combine with and support your mental health plan, medication regime and treatment by your doctor, counsellor, psychologist or mental health practitioner.
